A very detailed perspective image of Melbourne in 1882. This would have to be one of the most impressive prints of Melbourne that you could have on your wall. We also supply a complimentary A4 print of the Key to this image, showing the location of many of the popular buildings and places of the day.

I have a print of this image at my house, blown up to A0 size and all of my family and visitors just love looking back in time, amazed at the detail, colours and spotting some of the landmarks that still exist. We have spent many hours getting this image into its current state, removing scrapes, terrible fold lines, and restoring some missing bits.

The original artwork was a supplement to "The Illustrated Melbourne News", April, 1882. Signed and dated in image : A.C. COOKE DEL 1882

The notes from the State Library describe this image as "A bird's-eye view of Melbourne from the south bank of the Yarra looking north, showing sailing ship in the Pool, centre foreground, with the Customs House above in Flinders Street. Across the Yarra River, the single span Prince's Bridge can be seen at the right hand side of the view. The Port Melbourne railway line runs diagonally across the Yarra and to its left is the Queen Street bridge. Major landmark buildings and spires of churches can be seen in the CBD. The Exhibition Building on the Carlton Gardens' site can be seen to the north and to the left of it the curve of College Crescent is visible, with the tower of Ormond College and to its left Trinity College, in the grounds of Melbourne University."

This is a digitally retouched reproduction of the original held by the State Library of Victoria. All prints are reproduced without the HOTPRESS watermarks.

Our team of conservators have worked on a high resolution digital image in order to remove blemishes and artifacts such as stains, mould, scratches and damage caused by the handling of the original. We strive to provide authentic representations of the original work that are suitable for enlargements that retain the tones and character of the original.

Below is an image showing the level of detail available from this picture. This is the Customs House which is found on the map directly in the centre, and is the building closest to the Yarra.
