Combined views of Melbourne in 1885, printed on one sheet in Harper's Weekly, showing in the centre - a visualisation of the future site of Melbourne in 1835, with a number of public buildings surrounding it, viz. "Public Offices and Treasury Gardens", "Post-Office", "Government-House", "Town-Hall", "Exhibition Building" and the "Public Library".

Notes from the State Library tell us that this image is a "Page from: Harper's Weekly (New York) vol. 29, no. 1498; 5 September 1885, p. 580. Clockwise from u.l.: EXHIBITION BUILDING. -- PUBLIC LIBRARY. -- PUBLIC OFFICES AND TREASURY GARDENS. -- POST-OFFICE. -- GOVERNMENT-HOUSE. -- TOWN-HALL. -- THE FOUNDING OF MELBOURNE, AUGUST, 1835. Central engraving, The Founding of Melbourne, shows John Pascoe Fawkner's ship the Enterprize unloading at the Yarra Basin. The figures depicted on the bank of the river are from left to right: Captain Lancey, George Evans, Robert Hay Marr and William Jackson. Captain Peter Hunter is in the stern of the Enterprise."

This is a digitally retouched reproduction of the original held by the State Library of Victoria. All prints are reproduced without the HOTPRESS watermarks.

Our team of conservators have worked on a high resolution digital image in order to remove blemishes and artifacts such as stains, mould, scratches and damage caused by the handling of the original. We strive to provide authentic representations of the original work that are suitable for enlargements that retain the tones and character of the original.
