A photograph of Collins Street looking east towards the Treasury Building around 1920. Photograph attributed to the Kerr Brothers.
We see a busy street, both on the footpaths and on the road. Cable trams, hansom cabs, horse drawn drays, automobiles and pedestrians are all moving in different directions without a single traffic light in sight. At this period, the architecture of Collins Street had probably reached its zenith. Unfortunately, a lot of the major buildings in Collins Street have since been demolished.
The notes from the State Library tell us that this image is "A view along Collins Street across the Queen Street intersection, with the Spencer Street tram in the foreground. A hansom cab with the driver visible above the top of the cab is waiting at the right side of the street."
