A bird's-eye view of Melbourne in 1873 from high above Hobson's Bay. This image originally appeared in the Illustrated Australian News, July 1873.

The detail in this engraving is absolutely amazing, providing the viewer with a stunning representation of Melbourne. A large number of buildings and locations are easily identifiable by anyone who knows Melbourne. The picture takes in all of Melbourne starting from the west, where we can see Williamstown, right across the city to Hawthorn in the east.  At the top of the image we see Essendon, and St Kilda is at the bottom of the image. The preparation and engraving must have taken many months of work. We recommend that you might be better to purchase A2, A1 or A0 size to really see the detail.

Drawn by A.C. Cooke, and engraving by C. E. Winston and E. Lee.
