A beautiful image of Flinders Street Station taken in 1912, just a few years after its completion. Our restoration work on this image has taken many hours to achieve this end result. This is a pivotal image of Melbourne's most famous icon, in the period between when it was completed and the outbreak of World War I. We feel that we have given this image new life and made it more acceptable to the general public.
Notes from the State Library tell us that this image is "Looking across intersection of Swanston and Flinders Streets from north east corner showing Flinders Street Station with view along Flinders street, heavy traffic of cars, trams, horse drawn vehicles and pedestrians on intersection."
This is a digitally retouched reproduction of the original held by the State Library of Victoria.
Our team of conservators have worked on a high resolution digital image in order to remove blemishes and artifacts such as stains, mould, scratches and damage caused by the handling of the original. We strive to provide authentic representations of the original work that are suitable for enlargements that retain the tones and character of the original.
