A beautiful panorama of Melbourne taken in 1920, as part of a set of panoramas, showing the whole city. Looking south, with the photographer perched high above Flinders Street, in the railway station clock tower, near the corner of Elizabeth Street. On the far left we see the dome of the Station, some of the railway yards, continuing to the right we see Princes Bridge spanning the Yarra. On the south bank of the Yarra the Alexandra and Queen Victoria Gardens rise up towards Govenment House high on the horizon. In the centre of the image the south of the river was heavily industrialised, with the suburbs of St Kilda and South Melbourne off in the distance. The South Melbourne Town Hall stands out on the horizon, with the Sandridge Railway Bridge heading straight away from the photographer towards Port Melbourne. Then Queens Bridge sits at the top of the Turning Basin. There are still wharves operating within the basin, but they will not be accessible after Spencer Street Bridge is completed in 1930.

Notes from the State Library state that this is a "Bird's eye view of Melbourne, showing the Princes and Queens Bridges and the many commercial buildings of Melbourne. Views show the myriad of railway tracks, some traversing the Yarra river, with partial views of the Flinders Street Station to the left of the bridges."

This is a digitally retouched reproduction of the original held by the State Library of Victoria. All prints are reproduced without the HOTPRESS watermarks.
