1858 Collins Street Looking West

MI_1312

An early photograph around 1858 looking west along Collins Street, across Swanston Street. Sometimes referred to as "The Paper Boy", this photo actually shows a paper-boy standing in the intersection of Swanston and Collins Streets. The two main Melbourne papers at the time were the "Argus" and the "Age".

The shop at Number 60 on the corner was William Powell's, who was an ironmonger. They dealt in tools, locks and general hardware merchandise.
