1856 Map of the Colony of Victoria

MV_1001

A very detailed map of the Colony of Victoria as it was in 1856. Victoria was in the grip of its gold rush and these maps were produced to assist the great numbers of people who were off to the goldfields around Victoria. This map was "Published as the Act directs by the Proprietors, Melbourne, 1st Feb. 1856. Respectfully dedicated by Permission, to the Honorable Captain Andrew Clarke R.E. Surveyor General of Victoria by His Obediant Servants Tulloch & Brown, Engravers & Publishers, Melbourne". Also shown on the map are electoral boundaries and County Court Districts.

The original map was 55cm x 86cm, and we can print this map right up to that size, to show the detail.

The notes from the State Library tell us that this image is "Tulloch & Brown's map of the Colony of Victoria [cartographic material] : comprising part of New South Wales, the boundaries, counties, also seaport & inland townships, the gold fields with the latest discoveries, roads, tracks, &c. &c. / compiled from drawings in the Survey Office and correctly revised till 1856."

This is a digitally retouched reproduction of the original held by the State Library of Victoria. All prints are reproduced without the HOTPRESS watermarks.

Our team of conservators have worked on a high resolution digital image in order to remove blemishes and artifacts such as stains, mould, scratches. There was a lot of handling and storage damage, such as the wear around the folded creases which we have chosen to leave. We strive to provide authentic representations of the original work that are suitable for enlargements that retain the tones and character of the original.
